This asshole trucker was refusing to let us properly zipper merge, and attempted to run a car off the road when he attempted to pass.

UPDATE: Just heard back from the company. Yes, there is a chance that they’re just saying this, but I have a feeling it’s legitimate.

Absolutely. We do not take these types of issues lightly. So you know, I just heard back from our Safety Director. The driver has been terminated immediately. As a company, we feel the same way as you. We want to make sure roads are as safe as possible. We sincerely apologize if your safety felt threatened by the actions of one of our drivers. Thanks again for sending over the footage. Enjoy the rest of you evening!

I have no idea how I feel about that abrupt of a punishment, but then again, this guy has no business driving a truck.

I don’t know... it looks like SUV driver and Truck driver got into it before you got there. Truck driver doesn’t seem to be giving anyone else any problems... just that SUV.

based on my perspective I’m seeing an impatient dick in a 4runner

Maybe so, but it doesn’t give anyone the right to use their vehicle as a weapon; which is exactly what the trucker did.

yes. And no. Blocking their path does not constitute assault with a deadly weapon. Was the truck being a dick (too)? Yeah, but what they did wasn’t not akin to using their vehicle as a weapon.

I don’t see how the 4Runner was doing anything that egregious. If someone deliberately tried to block me/force me to merge on before I had to, I’d pass them on the shoulder too. In fact I have done so.

Major dickhead alert. People are going to go in front of you, Mr. Professional Truck Driver. Get used to it.

Now, echoing what someone else said, I don’t know what transpired between the Toyota and the semi before the video.

Passing on the shoulder - ALWAYS bad. I guess not in cases of societal collapse and or life threatening situations. but yeah. Don’t do it. I had a friend in high school who was hit by a car passing on the shoulder. They ended up being fine by luck alone.

Looks like they’re both being dicks. I don’t think the 4runner needed to pass that truck in order to merge, though. Just give it up and get in front of the E class or something...

I like how the car ahead of you has the most annoying brake lights in the world but can’t be bothered to make sure their third brake light works.

Only times I’ve done it are when traffic is basically at a standstill going from 2 lanes to 1 on construction. Everyone moves over a mile in advance, and there’s often that one person that tries to move halfway into the lane that will eventually close just to stop traffic from passing and merging farther ahead. Basically a situation like this only with two lanes, and somebody doing the aforementioned behavior.

I’ve only done it on a wide-open interstate when I could see clearly ahead, and I’ve never floored it around someone (only done this a handful of times), but in certain situations I believe it’s a safe way to get around a passive aggressive, or just plane aggressive driver. I don’t know if I would’ve passed in the specific scenario the 4Runner was in, but once again, when someone is deliberately trying to block your car, I can’t blame him either.

If this dude was a bike it would be considered assault by auto. Just because the car has a more protective cage, doesn’t mean it isn’t.

I’ll say that I’ve been tempted many times to take my own path (since the cruiser allows for some path liberty) but at the end of the day...taking the shoulder is almost always a bad move. It doesn’t save much time, it aggravates a situation and creates potential dangerous situations. Maybe its just me getting older but my toolbox for dealing with idjuts on the road is slowly getting whittled down to “breath, relax and wish for their cig lighter to land in their crotch then keep on keeping on.”

Why would it be? They moved to block, not to damage or injure. Maybe in Lane Splitting states i could see that, but thats certainly only applicable to bikes.

You mean the white Mercedes? It has LED’s which don’t get captured very well on camera, that is why they flicker.

That 2nd semi at the end of the clip is pretty agressive too. I think automated semi’s will be a great solution.

This actually happened in Georgia, where passing a stopped/left-turning vehicle on the right is always allowed if there is sufficient pavement to do so. That can include the shoulder. 4Runner did nothing remotely wrong.

Yes, but it’s the principal of the thing. The point of a zipper merge is to allow as many cars as possible to fill the street. By blocking off a portion of the road, he probably cost a few other drivers a whole light cycle because there was no room for them to go through.

It’s a bit too late for that, but I did give it to the company’s safety department, which actually seems to have taken it very seriously. Hopefully the guy gets some mandatory re-training.

As someone who spends plots of time on the interstate, I need to film more. It seems the worst drivers are truck drivers.

Agreed. Passing on the shoulder is FOR EMERGENCIES ONLY.

YOU ARE NOT ENTITLED TO BREAK THE LAW AND USE THE SHOULDER BECAUSE YOU ARE AN ASS OR BECAUSE SOMEONE PISSED YOU OFF
